Mixing and Making

Completing my target goal of compiling a team of stagecraft students to assist me in my project.

~ Reflection 2 ~

In my senior project, I will embark upon a hybrid project of designing and teaching grayscale makeup for the 2022 production of the Twilight Zone. Karen Pollard, head of the Drama Department and director of the show, agreed to be my mentor through this project and experience. Through September I worked on compiling my knowledge on multiple methods to accomplish a black-and-white motif. Pulling from youtube videos, Jean Fox’s masterclass, and my previous experiences in makeup. I worked on how to blend grayscale onto the stage with different mediums of makeup.
September showcased stumbles in connection to the underlying tones of the makeup; showing blue under the spotlight. I made notes and interferences, updating my mentor along the way. When we came back from October break, I met with all the stagecraft classes to finalize a team to help me through the process. I explained my project, what the overall goals were, and what I needed from individuals wanting to join. By the end of the week, I had my team made up of two stagecraft one student and one stagecraft two students. My team and I met during rehearsals and communicated through texts, working on different combinations of makeup on the actors. But despite multiple trails, the base kept coming out with a blue hue. I found myself very stressed, desperate to find an affordable combination that would appear undeniably gray. During this time I also had struggles with my mentor’s view on the composition of the makeup and my own view. But I performed effective communication both in-person conversation and email to clear any confusion. And at the end of October, I found a base using the Ben Nye P-15 “Catavar” gray cream that proved to be the most effective.
We purchased 6 wheels of the newfound gray, as well as 4 more wheels of Ben Nye black and white. My team and I worked to divide the wheels to fit in 24 small makeup containers that would be a part of the kit (along with baby powder, a powder puff, sponges, and more) we would distribute to the actors. While the kits were being created, I continued to refine the composition by practicing a full face of makeup on different actors in the cast. Moving into tech, my new challenge was turning to teach the actors how to technically apply the makeup, as well as the necessary aspects to take it off.
